SuperSport through to the quarters

SuperSport United handed CF Mounana a 4-1 thrashing in their final CAF Confederation Cup Group D clash, at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The result saw Matsatsantsa advance into the quarterfinals of the continental competition alongside group winners TP Mazembe, who defeated Hoyoya AC in a concurrent match in Lubumbashi.

SuperSport were on the front foot from the first whistle and had to wait only 14 minutes before they claimed the lead, with Thuso Phala and Aubrey Modiba combining to set up Bradley Grobler, who scored with a well-taken diving header.

On 27 minutes Grobler turned from scorer to provider, sending a great pass through to Thabo Mnyamane, who fired a low shot past goalkeeper Patrick Koss to make it 2-0.

United made it 3-0 in the 34th minute when Reneilwe Letsholonyane showed great skill and composure in the box to tee up Jeremy Brockie for a tap-in, and the New Zealander added another goal from the penalty spot just before halftime to make it 4-0.

The game looked to be dead and buried but Mounana at least pulled a goal back 11 minutes into the second half, with Ellesah Mensah turning Clayton Daniels beautifully before beating Ronwen Williams. The Gabonese threatened a few times to further reduce the deficit, as United totally lost their attacking rhythm in the second half and were unable to reassert the dominance they enjoyed in the opening 45 minutes.

Group D finished with TP Mazembe as winners on 12 points, while SuperSport were second with 10. Horoya came home in third on nine points, while Mounana finished last with zero points after suffering six straight losses.

United will face Group C winners Zesco United in the quarterfinals, while Mazembe will come up against either Recreativo Libolo or Smouha SC.
