Maritzburg United sweat on Onyango

Maritzburg United are likely to be without key defender Brian Onyango when they face SuperSport United in the second leg of their MTN8 semifinal at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday.

Onyango picked up a hamstring injury while on national team duty with Kenya this week and will be assessed by the Maritzburg medical team.

Better news is that the club hopes to have the paperwork completed for Cameroon midfielder Yazid Atouba to make his debut following his arrival from DR Congo side AS Vita Club.

Coach Fadlu Davids is quietly optimistic that his side can reach a first ever MTN8 final after a 1-1 away draw in the first leg, but knows the quality of their opponents.

"We have to be cautious," he told reporters. "Yes, we have an away goal, but if SuperSport scores, that really puts us on the back foot. We know we can only draw 0-0, other than that we have to go out and win the game.

"We must respect SuperSport's quality, we know that are an extremely dangerous team. While you are on the attack they can immediately score a goal, exactly like they did in the first leg.

"So we have to be aware of their strengths and approach the game in a very pragmatic way. We can't go all-out attack, open ourselves up. On the one hand you want to defend the 0-0, but if they score that all changes."

Maritzburg have looked excellent defensively this season with just a single goal conceded in their four matches to date.

"It's important to have a good solid spine, a good solid defence, the stability to be able to attack from a solid defensive unit,” Davids said.

“That's why we have such quality and depth and experience in the back-bone of our team.”
