Preview: Bloem Celtic v SuperSport Utd
In the previous 49, Celtic have a narrow advantage with 12 wins to 11 for SuperSport. But the teams have also played to an incredible 26 draws, proof that they have been hard to separate down the years.
In matches played at Celtic, the home side have won seven to SuperSport’s four, with 14 draws. Celtic have outscored their opponents 29-23. SuperSport’s last away win came over five years ago in May 2012 in the league.
The two cup matches have both ended in Celtic’s favour – they claimed a top eight final win in 2005 with a 1-0 success, while in 2008 they triumphed in a Telkom Knockout quarterfinal 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
That quarterfinal was a remarkable fixture as there were three own goals (two for SuperSport) and a penalty (for Celtic).
Celtic have exited the competition in the first round in seven of the eight previous seasons, though in the odd one out, 2012, they lifted the trophy, beating Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the final.
It means the side has just three Telkom Knockout wins in their last 13 games – all coming on their road to lifting the trophy in 2012. Celtic have played a total of 32 matches in the Telkom Knockout in the PSL era, winning only seven of those to go with nine draws and 16 defeats.
Celtic have been involved in six penalty shoot-outs in the Telkom Knockout in the PSL era, winning three and losing three. The last was in 2015 when they were edged 3-2 by the now defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces in the first round.
SuperSport have reached the semifinals at least of the Telkom Knockout competition in each of the last five seasons. They exited at that stage in 2012, 2013 and 2015, claimed victory in 2014 and lost in the final in 2016.
Their 17 matches played since 2012 is the most by any club in the competition over that period, with 11 wins, two draws and four defeats.
In fact, SuperSport have just a single first round exit in the Telkom Knockout in the last 10 seasons, that coming at the hands of Lamontville Golden Arrows (0-1) in 2011.
