Cape Town City denied three points in Mbombela
Aubrey Ngoma’s goal was not enough as SuperSport United came back to ensure they drew 1-1 against Cape Town City at Mbombela Stadium in the Absa Premiership on Saturday afternoon.
The stalemate sees coach Benni McCarthy’s outfit placed at No 5 on the log table with 18 points and they have failed to win in five league matches.
For United, Azubike Egwuekwe scored their equaliser in the dying minutes of the clash to ensure they salvaged a point.
Both sides had a cagey start in the match and the first 10 minutes failed to produce clear-cut scoring opportunities.
But it was Jeremy Brockie who missed a glorious opportunity in the 12th minute after a great pass from Thuso Phala, as the striker failed to connect with the ball.
The 22nd minute saw the Cape Town outfit pushing forward and Mpho Matsi tried a long arrange effort, but failed to trouble goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse as it went wide.
McCarthy’s men had their best chance in the 30th minute, but Pieterse denied Victor Obinna from close range resulting from Ngoma’s brilliant pass.
However, Ngoma would break the deadlock in the 44th minute when he beat Pieterse with a powerful shot following a beautiful pass from Craig Martins.
It was 1-0 at the interval for the visitors.
Upon their resurgence from the tunnel, the Citizens were on the front foot in search of a second goal, but the Tshwane giants were stable at the back.
In the 66th minute, Sifiso Myeni beat his marker on the right flank and unleashed a low shot to beat Stephens, but the keeper was equal to the task and saved the effort.
Coach Eric Tinkler’s men put more pressure on the visitors and Bradley Grobler came close in the 77th minute with a clever header which went wide of Stephens’ left upright.
Deep in the injury time, Egwuekwe found the back of the net for the hosts as he headed home from a great cross from Aubrey Modiba.
Despite United’s push for a winner, both sides were not clinical as they created chances in the injury time and they settled for a point apiece.
The draw leaves the CAF Confederation Cup finalists sitting at number 11 with 15 points eight league matches so far.
