Fileccia sends Maritzburg to second place

Maritzburg United came back to beat Platinum Stars 2-1 in a dramatic Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The win sees the Team of Choice move to second place on the league standings, while Dikwena remain 16th on the league standings.

Dikwena began the match well as they dominated possession in the opening stages of the game.

The visitors were awarded a free-kick in a promising area in the 12th minute following a good move by Roger De Sa's side.

Riyaad Norodien stepped up and he hit the back of the net with a thunderous effort from the set-piece to make it 1-0 to Stars.

The hosts then pushed forward in numbers as they looked to level matters and Fortune Makaringe tried his luck from range in the 19th minute.

However, the Maitzburg midfielder's long-range attempt was easily saved by Stars goalkeeper Dino Visser.

The Team of Choice continued to push for the equalizing goal with the half-time break fast approaching.

Bevan Fransman played a long ball into the Stars box for his Maritzburg team-mate Andrea Fileccia in the 34th minute, but Visser came out and snatched the ball.

Stars then stood firm at the back until the match referee Victor Gomes blew the half-time whistle and the visitors were leading 1-0 at the interval.

Maritzburg continued to pile pressure on Stars after the restart and Mohau Mokate's effort was cleared off the goal line in the 50th minute.

Visser was kept busy by the Team of Choice attackers as he denied Mokate in the 57th minute, before saving Pogiso Sanoko's effort on the hour mark.

The former Polokwane City shot-stopper then produced a fine save to deny Belgian striker Fileccia after the hour mark.

The momentum was with the hosts in the closing stages of the game and Stars were forced to sit back and launch quick counter attacks.

Fileccia was not to be denied in the 88th minute as he beat Visser after the shot-stopper had failed to punch the ball away from the box.

The Team of Choice were then awarded a penalty in stoppage time and Fileccia beat Visser from the spot-kick to seal Maritzburg's 2-1 win.
