Galaxy thump Maritzburg to end winless run
TS Galaxy broke their winless run in the 2020-21 DStv Premiership season with a 3-0 thumping of Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.
The Rockets moved off bottom spot and up to 12th place on the league standings after claiming only their second win of the league season.
Maritzburg dropped back down to 15th as a result and are one of three teams locked on nine points at the foot of the Premiership table.
Wayde Lekay got the ball rolling for Galaxy in the 33rd minute. Lindokuhle Mbatha found the towering forward who fired past Jethren Barr at his near post to hand the visitors a narrow lead at the break.
Provider turned scorer three minutes after the interval as Mbatha doubled Galaxy's lead. Mxolisi Macuphu teed up the veteran winger who beat Barr for his first goal of the campaign.
The Team of Choice almost found a way back into the game through Judas Moseamedi in the 62nd minute, but Marlon Heugh pulled off a superb save to keep out the forward.
Galaxy put the game beyond any reasonable doubt with seven minutes of regulation time remaining as second-half substitute Felix Badenhorst powered home a free-kick to hand Owen da Gama his first win as coach of the club.
The Rockets return to action away to Orlando Pirates next Tuesday, while Maritzburg will host the very same opponents in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.
