Grobler rescues SuperSport against AmaZulu
SuperSport United came back to hold AmaZulu FC to a 1-1 draw in a DStv Premiership match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday evening.
The draw saw Matsatsantsa remain third on the league standings, while Usuthu slipped down to 10th place.
Matsatsantsa were the better side in the opening stages of the match with Ghampani Lungu looking lively upfront for the home side.
The Zambia international unleashed a solid shot which was fantastically saved by Veli Mothwa in the Usuthu goal-posts in the sixth minute.
Lungu then connected with a corner-kick from Sipho Mbule in the 14th minute but he was denied by the alert goalkeeper.
Usuthu grew in confidence as the match progressed and Augustine Mulenga forced SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into a great save just before the half-hour mark.
Bafana Bafana international Williams was beaten in the 33rd minute when Siphelele Mthembu scored with a powerful low shot to make it 1-0 to AmaZulu.
Usuthu continued to attack after taking the lead with the half-time break approaching and Williams produced a fine save to deny Mulenga to ensure that the first half ended with AmaZulu leading only 1-0.
Moses Waiswa and Jamie Webber were introduced by SuperSport head coach Kaitano Tembo prior to the start of the second half as the hosts looked to level matters.
However, the AmaZulu defence was able to contain and frustrate Matsatsantsa's deadly strikers Thamsanqa Gabuza and Bradley Grobler.
AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy made a tactical change as he introduced defender Mario Booysen and pulled out attacker Mulenga just after the hour-mark.
The decision to introduce Booysen backfired as the experienced centre back fouled Gabuza in the box and the home side was awarded a penalty.
Grobler stepped up and he made no mistake as he beat Mothwa from the spot-kick to make it 1-1 with 13 minutes left on the clock.
The visitors tried to respond with a late winning goal, but Matsatsantsa stood firm at the back with Thatayaone Ditlhokwe making some crucial clearances.
Ultimately, the match ended in a 1-1 draw as SuperSport and AmaZulu shared the spoils on the night.
