Royal AM score late again to deny Marumo first win

Royal AM came from two goals down to hold Marumo Gallants to a 2-2 draw in a thrilling 2021/22 DStv Premiership match at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The hosts were on course to register their first win in South Africa's top-flight but Royal AM left it late - not for the first time this season - to earn a valuable point on their travels.

Sedwyn George found the equaliser deep into second half stoppage time as Thwihli Thwahla jumped up to third place on the league standings. Marumo, who would've moved out of the relegation zone with a win, are 15th.

The best chance of the first half came on the cusp of halftime. Zukile Mkhize was a constant threat down the right flank and was unlucky to watch his left-footed effort come back off the post with Washington Arubi beaten.

Marumo made good use of the slice of good fortune and hit the front three minutes after the break when Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo squeezed a low shot past Patrick Nyame.

Marumo doubled their lead with a stunning strike in the 73rd minute which seemed to lay the foundation for a much needed win. Letsie Koapeng created space for himself on the edge of the area before letting fly an unstoppable shot, which thundered into the back of the net.

Royal AM were gifted a way back into the encounter when Lebogang Mabotja handled the ball inside the area. Victor Letsoalo duly stepped up and beat Arubi for his sixth goal of the league season.

Marumo looked sure to have done enough to hold onto all three points, but Royal AM never gave up and were rewarded in the fourth minute of stoppage-time. Letsoalo hit the post and when Arubi pulled off a superb save on the rebound the chance seemed to have passed, but George remained alert to score his first of the season, a few minutes after rising off the bench.
