Sekela Sithole fires Baroka past Royal AM

Baroka FC edged past Royal AM 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium as they ended their 12-match winless run in the 2021/22 DStv Premiership on Wednesday evening.

Sekela Sithole's late goal earned Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele the victory which elevated the team up to 15th spot on the league standings, while Thwihli Thwahla remained fifth on the log.

Bakgaga Ba Mphahelele started the match brightly with Sithole seeing a lot of the ball in Thwihli Thwahla's half as the hosts pushed for an early goal.

The former Lamontville Golden Arrows attacker had an opportunity to put Baroka into the lead after they were awarded a free-kick in a promising area in the 20th minute.

However, Sithole's effort was well saved by Royal's in-form goalkeeper Hugo Nyame, who had kept two successive clean sheets against Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs.

The hosts continued to control the game as we approached the halftime break and Nhlanhla Mgaga placed his shot over the crossbar after combining well with Manuel Kambala.

Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele's dominance in terms of possession continued after the restart as they searched for an opening in Thwihli Thwahla's defence which was led by Thato Lingwati.

Royal head coach John Maduka decided to introduce Victor Letsoalo in the 69th minute, who had scored the only goal of the match as the Durban side defeated Chiefs 1-0 over the weekend.

Maduka's counterpart, Kgoloko Thobejane reacted by introducing reigning DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season Evidence Makgopa as both teams pushed for a late goal.

It was the hosts, who snatched a late winning goal when Sithole beat Nyame with a decent finish in the 83rd minute after the Royal defence were left exposed and ultimately, Baroka emerged 1-0 winners on the day.
