Scott fires Stellies to win over CT City

Stellenbosch FC ended their 2021-22 DStv Premiership campaign with a 1-0 win over Cape Town City at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The only goal of this tightly contested encounter was netted by Granwald Scott who marked the end of his spell with Stellies with a late goal after the Citizens' defence was caught napping.

The win left Stellies placed third on the league standings, but they could be leapfrogged by fifth-placed Royal AM and seventh-placed Orlando Pirates as the two teams have games in hand.

While City remained second on the standings despite the defeat in the Cape Derby clash and they can only finish in this position if the other results involving Royal AM and Pirates go their way.

Stellenbosch and City cancelled each other out in the opening stages of the game as they were both looking to play on the attack through their speedy attackers.

Most of the ball was played in the middle of the park with City's Cameroon youth international Brice Ambina battling with Stellies hardman Sibongiseni Mthethwa for control of the midfield.

Stellenbosch suffered a blow as Venezualan winger Juan Ortiz went down injured and he was replaced by exciting attacker Devon Titus just before the half-hour mark.

The score was 0-0 at halftime following a first half which had no clear cut chances.

The two teams continued to cancel each other out after the restart with Nathan Fasika showing great pace, before stopping the hard-running Du Preez.

Taahir Goedeman was introduced by coach Eric Tinkler in the 58th minute and the youngster brought some needed urgency and creativity to the City midfield.

However, Stellies looked dangerous on the counterattack in the closing stages of the game and Waseem Issacs' goal-bound effort was deflected wide of the target.

The hosts did snatch a late winning goal in the 87th minute when Granwald Scott scored from close range to hand Stellenbosch a 1-0 win following a well-worked free-kick.
