Stellenbosch move past SuperSport United into MTN8 semis

Stellenbosch FC secured a 1-0 win over SuperSport United in the MTN8 quarter-final match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday evening.

The win saw Stellies reach the semi-finals of the Top 8 competition for the first time in the club's history - joining Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates in the last four.

SuperSport, on the other hand, bowed out of the tournament and the Tshwane giants will now turn their attention to the DStv Premiership following their Cup elimination.

Matsatsantsa were the better side in the opening exchanges and they had a chance to break the deadlock in the ninth minute, but Shandre Campbell was denied by goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

However, Stellies grew gradually into the game and they were able to test goalkeeper Washington Arubi who denied Devon Titus in the 34th minute to ensure that the first-half ended with the two teams locked at 0-0.

SuperSport pushed for the opening goal after the restart and Campell looked the likeliest player to score as the 18-year-old had an effort saved by Stephens four minutes after the hour-mark.

The two teams searched for a late-winning goal towards the end of the second-half, but they couldn't find the back of the net and the game went into extra-time after the encounter ended in a 0-0 draw in regulation time.

The decisive goal was netted by Andre de Jong in the 99th minute as the New Zealand international headed home Fawaaz Basadien's well-taken corner-kick at the near-post to seal Stellenbosch's 1-0 win over SuperSport.
