Leopards, Tshakuma in derby draw

Round 7 of the 2017/18 National First Division completed seven of its eight matches this weekend, with leaders Stellenbosch FC missing out on the chance to open up a three-point lead at the top of the standings.

The round got under way with Jomo Cosmos finding Friday the 13th to be an unlucky date, as they succumbed 1-0 away to Cape Town All Stars at Athlone Stadium - a result which pushed the hosts into the top four of the standings.

Saturday’s big win came from Royal Eagles, who overpowered Mthatha Bucks 3-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium thanks to goals from Joshua Sauls, Mazwi Mncube and Diego Brown, while Uthongathi FC edged Witbank Spurs 1-0 at the Princess Magogo Stadium.

Saturday’s other matches ended in draws, with second-placed University of Pretoria held 1-1 at Goble Park by Super Eagles, while Black Leopards and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila played out a goalless stalemate in Thohoyandou.

Sunday’s two games featured just two goals, with Highlands Park held 1-1 by Real Kings as Mothobi Mvala’s opener was cancelled out late on by the hosts, while Stellenbosch were held 0-0 at Athlone Stadium by Richards Bay to lead the log by just one point from AmaTuks.

The seventh round will wrap up the final match between Ubuntu Cape Town and Mbombela United on Monday afternoon at the Athlone Stadium.

The NFD’s next round will be played next weekend, October 21-22.
