Tshwane rivals play to a draw

SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns played out a goalless draw in a 2020-21 DStv Premiership match at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday.

In a rivalry that has historically provided high-scoring matches, it was a rather dull contest with little chances to write home about. The result leaves Sundowns top of the league standings on 25 points, two clear of Matsatsantsa in second spot. Swallows FC will have a chance to draw level with Sundowns with victory at Baroka FC later this evening.

The first shot in anger finally came in the 21st minute. Patient build-up play offered Sipho Mbule a chance to take aim at goal but his resulting effort flew just over Denis Onyango's crossbar.

SuperSport suffered a major blow on the half-hour mark as Teboho Mokoena had to be stretchered off the pitch with an injury, resulting in a change of system as Siyabonga Nhlapo came on his place.

Sundowns threatened to create opportunities of their own and finally conjured a chance in the 55th minute, but Themba Zwane failed to hit the target from close range.

Two minutes later, Bradley Grobler came closest to a match winner. Having lost his marker at a corner-kick, the league's leading goalscorer directed a header on goal but Onyango pulled off a superb save to deny the SuperSport forward.

The Brazilians introduced Lesedi Kapinga, Aubrey Modiba and Hlompho Kekana in the closing stages in search of what would prove to be a decisive goal in the contest, but neither team would find the back of the net as they ultimately settled for a point apiece.
