Siwelele, Stellies miss top eight chance
Siwelele FC and Stellenbosch FC missed an opportunity to climb into the Betway Premiership top eight when they drew 0-0 at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday night.
The result saw Siwelele remain 11th in the standings - two points behind eighth-placed TS Galaxy as the battle for a top eight finish continues. Coach Lehlohonolo Seema's side will be on the road next weekend as they travel to Soweto to take on Orlando Pirates on March 14.
Stellies, on the other hand, also remained 10th in the standings - a point behind Galaxy. However, the Winelands side will get an opportunity to leapfrog Galaxy as the two teams are scheduled to lock horns on March 13 in the Western Cape.
Both teams created promising chances in the first-half, with Christian Saile denied by Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens in the 15th minute. At the other end, Ricardo Goss was forced into action in the 41st minute to save an effort from Aseko Tiwani, keeping the score level at 0-0 heading into the break.
After the restart, Stellenbosch pushed hard for the opening goal, prompting coach Gavin Hunt to refresh his attack with 21 minutes remaining. The veteran coach substituted Langelihle Phili and brought on Tshegofatso Mabasa, who scored for Stellies on his debut last month.
Both teams launched late attacks in a desperate bid to snatch a winning goal, but neither could keep their efforts on target in the latter stages of the match. Ultimately, the game ended in a hard-fought 0-0 draw as Siwelele and Stellenbosch shared the spoils on the night
