City win over high flying Chippa United
Polokwane City continued their great form in the Absa Premiership with a 3-1 win over high-flying Chippa United at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday night.
The Chilli Boys took an early lead though George Akpabio, but goals either side of halftime from Tshepo Molala and Rendani Ndou, as well as a late penalty from Dodam Dogere, saw Rise and Shine claim the victory.
The Limpopo side has now claimed 16 points from the last 18 available, having gone on a seven-game winless streak before hitting this remarkable run of form. As for Chippa, the loss is a second in their last four matches, but they have still enjoyed a fine return to the top flight.
Chippa got off to a great start and opened the scoring just eight minutes into the first half. Andile Mbenyane provided the assist and George Akpabio was able to find the back of the net with a right-footed shot.
Polokwane reacted well to going behind and began to test goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela on a regular basis. They drew level in the 38th minute through Tshepo Molala, who turned home Jabu Maluleke’s cross to make it 1-1.
The home side continued to attack in the early stage of the second half, with Joseph Musonda, Vusi Mthimkhulu and Esau Kanyenda all guilty of spurning good scoring chances.
However, Rendani Ndou did not commit the same crime in the 62nd minute – he headed home Musonda’s cross to make it 2-1 and put Rise and Shine ahead for the first time in the game.
Raymond Monama almost added to Polokwane’s advantage two minutes later, but his effort struck the upright, with Mzimela well beaten.
On 72 minutes Mzimela came up with a great save to keep out a goal-bound effort from Maluleke and nine minutes later he turned away another shot, this time from substitute Dodam Dogere, to keep Chippa in contention.
However, the Chilli Boys were unable to force an equaliser, leaving Polokwane to score from the penalty spot through Dogere in injury time and ultimately savour another Absa Premiership victory.
