City stun Dikwena to reach Nedbank Cup quarters

An extra-time penalty from Carlington Nyadombo secured a 2-1 come-from-behind victory for Polokwane City over 10-man Platinum Stars in the Nedbank Cup, at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Saturday afternoon. The game was deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Robert Ng'ambi scored for the second time this season against Rise and Shine before Edgar Manaka levelled matters in first-half stoppage time. Gift Sithole saw red for the hosts in second-half added time.

Dikwena opened the scoring as early as the 11th minute through Ng'ambi. A poor clearance by Tshepo Tema fell to the Malawi international, whose diving header was deflected into the back of the net via Muzikayifani Ngidi.

Polokwane were finding it difficult to break down a confident Stars side, who had only conceded nine goals in 14 league games since their 4-0 defeat to Bidvest Wits last November.

But on the cusp of halftime, Polokwane found the equaliser. Manaka latched onto a cross from the right flank to level matters in only his second start of the season.

Second-half substitute Sphesihle Nzimande went within inches of putting the visitors in front in the 66th minute. The Polokwane striker had the beating of Mbogeni Mzimela, but not the woodwork.

Stars then rattled the crossbar through Kobamelo Kodisang seven minutes later. Lackluster defending , again, almost proving their downfall as an attempted clearance landed at Kodisang's feet - the youngster unlucky not to restore the hosts’ lead.

Sithole was having a day to forget and received his marching orders in second-half stoppage time following a second bookable offence.

Eleazar Rodgers had a chance to put Stars back in front in first-half extra-time, but could only succeed in guiding his effort wide with the goal at his mercy.

The game seemed to be heading for penalties, but Polokwane wrapped things up in the 111th minute. Ryan de Jongh, brought in to shore up the defence, was guilty of fouling Puleng Tlolane inside the area.

Nyadombo duly stepped up to send Polokwane into the quarters for the first time in their history.
