City crowned Telkom Knockout champions
Cape Town City were crowned 2016 Telkom Knockout champions after beating SuperSport United 2-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday evening.
Aubrey Ngoma and Judas Moseamedi were on target for the club from the Mother City, with Kingston Nkhatha finding the back of the net for the Tshwane club.
Both sides looked threatening in the opening 10 minutes of the highly anticipated encounter, with Thuso Phala squandered a glaring chance for Matsatsantsa - the winger was made to rue his miss soon after.
City, who went into the game as the underdogs, took a surprise lead in the 13th minute when Aubrey Ngoma made it 1-0 with a powerful low shot from the edge of the area.
Eric Tinkler's men had a chance to double their lead from a corner-kick four minutes later, but SuperSport goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse did well to gather the cross.
In the 27th minute, Clayton Daniels pushed forward as SuperSport searched for the equalizing goal, but his drive was blocked away from danger by the City defence.
The goalscorer ,Ngoma, became the first player to be booked seven minutes later following a foul on Reneilwe Letsholonyane as pressure mounted on City.
However, City managed to contain SuperSport until the match referee blew the half-time whistle with former leading 1-0 at the break.
Pieterse was called into action just minute into the second-half when reacted quickly to gather City captain Lebogang Manyama's cross from close range.
With his side trailing, Stuart Baxter decided to pull out the ineffective Jeremy Brockie for Cole Alexander a minute before the hour-mark.
Matsatsantsa did restore parity in the 71st minute through Kingston Nkhatha, who pounced inside the City box and made it 1-1.
However, City responded with a goal two minutes later as Ngoma set-up substitute Judas Moseamedi, who beat Pieterse to restore his side's lead.
SuperSport launched late attacks in search of a late leveler, but City stood firm at the back and they emerged 1-0 winners - claiming their maiden major Cup trophy in the process.
