Arrows earn point against Chiefs to go back top
Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 0-0 draw by Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium Stadium on Saturday night.
The draw takes Amakhosi to fourth spot on the league standings, while Abafana Bes'thende move back to the top of the table.
Amakhosi saw most of the ball in the opening stages of the match and they should have grabbed an early through Gustavo Paez.
Siphiwe Tshabalala flashed the ball across the face of the Arrows goal-posts and it found Paez, who placed his effort wide of the target in the 13th minute.
Abafana Bes'thende were very quick on the counter-attack and they nearly took the lead in the 28th minute against the run of the play.
Nduduzo Sibiya set-up Siphelele Magubane, who forced Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune into a good low save.
Four minutes later at the other end, Chiefs striker Paez tried an audacious chip over Arrows keeper Nkosingiphile Gumede from range.
However, the former South Africa youth international brilliantly finger-tipped the ball over the crossbar as the hosts searched for the opening goal.
The last chance of the first-half fell for Tshabalala from a free-kick, but the veteran winger placed his effort inches wide of the target and the score was 0-0 at the interval.
With his side lacking creativity, Chiefs coach Steve Komphela made a change 12 minutes after the restart - introducing Wiseman Meyiwa.
The teenage sensation was brought in to replace Khotso Malope as Amakhosi looked to take control of the midfield.
Tshabalala was Chiefs' livewire as he made good runs in the Arrows half and he nearly broke the deadlock in the 71st minute.
The former Free State Stars winger unleashed a low shot which was deflected, but Gumede was alert and he pulled off a good save.
It was end-to-end stuff in the closing stages of the match and Arrows came very close to snatching a late winning goal.
Wayde Jooste found some space outside the Chiefs box and he pulled the trigger, but Khune produced a wonderful finger-tipping save.
The veteran South African keeper then came off his line to make a great save to deny Arrows striker Knox Mutizwa, but Khune got injured in the process.
As Chiefs had used up all allowed substitutions, Edmore Chirambadare, a midfielder by trade, replaced Khune in goal, but the hosts stood firm at the back and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
