Chippa edge Cape Town City

Chippa United registered a first win under Teboho Moloi's watchful eye as they came from a goal down to beat Cape Town City 2-1 in an Absa Premiership clash at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on Sunday.

Victory ended a five-game draw streak for the Chilli Boys as City suffered their second league defeat in succession. Abel Mabaso and Katlego Mashego with the goals following Lyle Lakay's opener.

City started the match on the front foot and should've opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Daniel Akpeyi with a brilliant save to deny Craig Martin who latched onto Ebrahim Seedat's pin-point cross.

The Citizens duly opened the scoring with 18 minutes on the clock.

Lehlohonolo Majoro showing great determination before whipping the ball into a dangerous area where Lakay was ready and waiting - the winger with a superb left-footed volley into the top corner.

The Chilli Boys first shot in anger fell to Mark Mayambela in the 32nd minute. Neat interplay between Sizwe Mdlinzo and the former Ajax Cape Town man opened space inside in the area for the latter, who guided his resulting shot wide of goal.

Majoro squandered a chance to double City's lead two minutes before the interval after losing his marker, but with time and space the forward failed to hit the target with his header attempt.

The visitors 1-0 up at the break.

Chippa improved in the second-half and pulled level in the 50th minute. Mabaso's cross-come-shot leaving Sage Stephens red-faced as he failed to keep out what looked a tame effort.

The Chilli Boys were well on top and turned on the style with an eye-catching move six minutes later. Kurt Lentjies and Mayambela heavily involved, but Menzi Masuku failed to convert with the goal at his mercy.

The hosts, though, did manage to double their lead through second-half substitute, Mashego, The veteran forward left with an easy finish - pouncing on rather comical defending by the visitors.

Benni McCarthy duly introduced Ayanda Patosi and Victor Obinna as City aimed to find a way back into the result, but it was not to be.

Victory moving Chippa up to eight place on the log standings, the Citizens remain in fifth following their fourth defeat of the season.
