Polokwane, Maritzburg in goalless draw
Maritzburg United held Polokwane City to a 0-0 draw in an Absa Premiership clash at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday evening.
Neither side able to find the back of the net in what was an uneventful clash, with the result and performance leaving the two sides with a lot to ponder. A point takes Rise and Shine up to 11th on the log standings, while the Team of Choice remain in 13th, in what has been a barren run for the KwaZulu-Natal outfit.
As is often the case following the first league game back following the international break, the clash took time to kick into action with neither side able to find any sort of rhythm in the early exchanges.
The opening half-hour provided very little in terms of goalmouth action, in what was a cagey and somewhat frustrating start to the game.
The Team of Choice with the first chance after 39 minutes in the Limpopo province. Good work from Mxolisi Kunene down the flank to create space for himself to fire in low cross - the ball narrowly evading the reaches of Evans Rusike who made a well timed run into the area.
At the break, neither side had anything to show for their efforts with the game deadlocked at 0-0.
The game followed a similar tempo following the interval with both teams reluctant to take a chance and throw numbers forward, in what was a battle at the wrong end of the league table.
Both teams finally showed some sort of urgency as the game entered the final 15 minutes, with Fadlu Davids and opposite number Bernard Molekwa, urging their respective troops up field.
Neither team, though, was able to found what would've proved a decisive goal as the two sides shared the spoils with the visitors unable to capitalize on weary looking City outfit, who played two hours of TKO football over the past weekend.
The result extending Maritzburg's winless run to seven matches, while it was Rise and Shine's third successive stalemate in South Africa's top-flight.
