Arrows, Baroka in four-goal thriller
Golden Arrows and Baroka FC played to a 2-2 draw in an Absa Premiership clash at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Sunday afternoon.
Gift Motupa bagged a brace for the visitors in a game where the lead exchanged hands on several occasions. The result moves Bakgaga up to seventh spot on the log standings, while Arrows remain in 10th.
Danny Venter and Knox Mutizwa found the back of the net for the hosts, who squandered a succession of late chances to win the clash.
Bakgaga made the better start in the KwaZulu-Natal province and were unlucky not to hit the front with 13 minutes on the clock.
Mduduzi Mdantsane's powerful left-footed shot from range looked destined for the back of the net, but Nkosingiphile Gumede did just about enough to tip the ball onto the woodwork and out of danger.
Bakgaga, though, duly got the opener four minutes later as Motupa pounced on a defensive error from Sandile Zuke before firing home through the legs of Gumede to give the visitors an early lead.
Baroka dominated the ensuing minutes with Motupa and Lucky Nguzana especially guilty of missing a catalogue of gilt-edged chances.
Abafana Bes’thende finally found some rhythm in the closing stages of the half and pulled level through Venter in the 42nd minute.
The former Free State Stars man has made a real impact since his move to the club this month and following a powerful surge into the area, the midfielder sent a rasping attempt past Virgil Vries as the teams headed for the tunnel all square at 1-1.
Arrows carried the momentum from Venter's goal into the second stanza and went close to grabbing the lead through Lehlohonolo Nonyane and Lerato Lamola following the break.
The hosts persistence finally paid dividends in the 67th minute as Mutizwa silenced the boo boys. The Zimbabwe international on hand to poke home after Vries failed to hold onto Lamola's shot.
Baroka, though, hit back soon after with Motupa quickest to pounce on a loose ball inside the area in the 75th minute. Arrows failed to clear their lines and were punished as the Bakgaga hit man rifled home his eighth goal of the campaign.
Thomas Chideu had a late chance to win it for the home side, but the second half substitute could only succeed in skying his attempt well over with the goal at his mercy.
