Maritzburg United drew 1-1 with Lamontville Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The draw sees the Team of the Choice and Abafana Bes'thende finish the season on position four, and eighth respectively on the league standings.

The visitors threatened first just three minutes into the game after they were awarded a free-kick in a promising area.

Danny Venter stepped up and forced Maritzburg goalkeeper Richard Ofori into a good save from the set-piece.

Arrows keeper Nkosingiphile Gumeded was called into action a minute later and he denied Maritzburg midfielder Deolin Mekoa.

It was end-to-end stuff and Arrows managed to break the deadlock through their hard-running marksman Lerato Lamola.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic forward beat Ofori with a good finish to make it 1-0 to Arrows in the 20th minute.

The hosts had a chance to level matters through Mekoa in the 37th minute with Fadlu Davids' side having pressed Arrows.

However, the left-footed attacker placed his effort wide of the target with visitors failing to punish Arrows.

Arrows were able to hold on to their lead and they were leading 1-0 at the interval.

Maritzburg midfielders struggled to create chances of for their main striker Andrea Fileccia, who was tighly marked in the early stages of the second-half.

Mxolisi Kunene, who is an attacking midfielder by trade, replaced Mekoa in the 66th minute as the hosts looked to level matters.

The momentum was with the Team of Choice in the closing stages of the game and they deservedly equalising through Fortune Makaringe.

The midfielder beat former South Africa under-23 international Gumede to make it 1-1 in the 82nd minute much to the delight of the home crowd.

The two teams then launched late attacks in search of more goals, but they could not score and the KwaZulu-Natal Derby ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
