CT City fight back to hold Highlands
Cape Town City managed to conjure a point with a 1-1 draw against Highlands Park despite playing most of the Absa Premiership game with 10-men at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Kermit Erasmus received his marching orders in the 18th minute of the match after kicking Mothobi Mvala in an off-the-ball incident. But despite taking the lead against a depleted Citizens outfit, Highlands were unable to hold on for all three points.
The referee was left with little choice but to send Erasmus for an early shower after the forward latched out at Mvala early in the game. The former Orlando Pirates striker reacted angrily after the Lions of the North midfielder delayed play, by kicking his counterpart right in front of the match official.
The visitors finally took advantage of being a man superior in the 55th minute as second-half substitute Tendai Ndoro found the back of the net.
The former Ajax Cape Town forward pounced on a defensive error before curling the ball past the onrushing Peter Leeuwenburgh, for a goal on his return to the Mother City.
City, though, never gave up the chase and as they have so often done over the course of the season, levelled matters late on in the contest as Craig Martin nodded home Surprise Ralani's cross in the 84th minute.
The game ebbed and flowed in the closing stages, but neither team could find the winner. The point moves City up above Polokwane City and into fifth, on goal difference, while Highlands remain in eighth.
