Cape Town City cruise past Chippa in PE
Cape Town City scored twice within seven second-half minutes in a 2-0 win over relegation threatened Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday evening.
Defeat leaves the Chilli Boys in 15th place on the log standings, a point from safety. Victory moves City up to third, six points off the top, and mathematically still in the title race with two games remaining.
Chippa dominated the early exchanges and should've grabbed the opener in the fifth minute following a swift counter-attack. The City defence opened up for Lerato Manzini, but the forward could only succeed in guiding his attempt narrowly wide with the goal at his mercy.
The hosts continued to squander several gilt-edged chances, including a 44th minute miss by Tercious Malepe. The utility midfielder found a pocket of space inside the area, but could only succeed in guiding his resulting attempt into the side-netting.
City improved following the break and dealt the home side a sucker punch with 79 minutes on the clock. Chippa failed to clear their lines and Shane Roberts made the hosts pay, poking home from close range for his first league goal, four minutes after coming off the bench.
Gift Links put the game to bed in the 86th minute. The attacker with a rasping left-footed finish following more poor defending from the Chilli Boys as they Eastern Cape club slumped to another demoralising defeat.
