Masalesa sends Chippa into Telkom KO quarters
Chippa United became the eighth and final team to book their place in the 2019 Telkom Knockout quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on Tuesday evening.
Lehlogonolo Masalesa scored the only goal of the game as the Chilli Boys got off to a winning start under new head coach Norman Mapeza, who manned the touchline for the first time following his appointment at the start of the month.
Chippa join Maritzburg United, Golden Arrows, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Highlands Park and Mamelodi Sundowns in the last eight.
The first chance and only noteworthy opportunity at goal in the first half fell at the feet of Ndumiso Mabena in the 16th minute. The Siwelele skipper's powerful shot from range caught his former teammate by surprise, but Patrick Tignyemb did enough to keep the ball from bulging the back of the net.
Chippa's first shot in anger finally came in the 65th minute as Boikanyo Komane let fly a rocket from range. The midfielder's thunderous effort whistled past Jackson Mabokgwane before clattering against the woodwork and bouncing away from danger.
In a game of few chances, it was no surprise that the winner came from a set-piece with Masalesa beating Mabokgwane to Tercious Malepe's corner-kick, nodding the ball home to send the home fans into delirium on a cold evening in the Eastern Cape province.
Celtic duly pushed forward in search of the equaliser, but the hosts would not be denied a first win of the season as they advance in the TKO.
