Sunday saw five Nedbank Cup Round of 32 matches played across South Africa, with Golden Arrows, TS Galaxy and Richards Bay securing wins in all-top-flight clashes to complete a busy weekend of action.

Early in the afternoon, Golden Arrows trumped fellow Betway Premiership side Orbit College 3-0 – with goals from Angelo van Rooi, Sede Dion and Ayabulela Maxwele – at the King Zwelithini Stadium. The match was a replay from Saturday night’s abandoned clash at the same venue which was called off due to lightning and inclement weather.

The mid-afternoon then saw Mkhambathi FC upset Lerumo Lions 2-1 in an ABC Motsepe League v Motsepe Foundation Championship battle at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium, thanks to strikes from Mehluleli Ndelu and Xolandi Zondo, while the meeting of MFC rivals Hungry Lions and Pretoria University ended 1-1 after extra time, before AmaTuks advanced on penalties.

At the same time, TS Galaxy edged fellow Premiership side Marumo Gallants 1-0 after extra time at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium, with Victor Letsoalo’s diving header in the 114th minute proving decisive.

The final clash of the weekend came from the DR Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein and was a six-goal thriller over two hours, with Siwelele FC and Richards Bay drawing 3-3. Grant Margeman and Sanele Zulu scored for the respective sides through regulation time, before the Natal Rich Boyz opened up a 3-1 lead early in the first half of extra time thanks to a brace from Lundi Mahala. However, the hosts struck back via an own goal from Thabani Zuke and an equaliser from Siphelele Luthuli to see the game end all square. They then spurned a chance to win the match on penalties, ultimately succumbing 4-3 to allow Bay to advance.

After the midweek start of the Round of 32 saw Stellenbosch FC and Mamelodi Sundowns secure progression with 2-1 wins over Kaizer Chiefs and Gomora United respectively, Friday kicked off the weekend action with Vasco da Gama racking up an emphatic 4-1 triumph over Luthuli Bridges (inspired by a brace of goals from TJ Diedericks), before Durban City edged past fellow top-flight side Chippa United 3-2 on penalties (after a goalless stalemate over 120 minutes) thanks to some heroics from veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet.

Saturday’s headline result came from the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, where Orlando Pirates kept up their domestic quadruple hopes with a comfortable 4-1 win over Tshakhuma FC. Andre De Jong and Thalente Mbatha put the Buccaneers 2-0 up inside the opening 20 minutes, before Sithembiso Ngobe pulled one back for the hosts late in the first half. However, a strike from Patrick Maswanganyi early in the second stanza and a late bullet from Sipho Mbule ensured Pirates advanced into the Round of 16 with no nervy moments to speak of.

The Soweto giants were joined in the next phase by Casric Stars, who recorded a 3-0 away win over Army Rocket at Olympia Park (thanks to a brace from Thuso Mogale and a strike by Ofentse Kgosana), while Sekhukhune United squeezed out a 1-0 win over lower-league Highbury at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium thanks to Lehlohonolo Mojela’s early goal.

At the same time, Jacksa Spears gave up a two-goal lead before trumping Cardinals FC 4-2 at Goble Park – with Moeti Mofokeng scoring twice in extra time – and Upington City upset top-flight Magesi FC at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium. The teams played out a 0-0 draw over 120 minutes, before Bafana Ba Gucci claimed a 5-4 win in the penalty shootout.

The Nedbank Cup Round of 32 will wrap up on Tuesday 10 February with two matches: Polokwane City v AmaZulu FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, and SSU M17 v Milford FC at the Dobsonville Stadium.
