Lamontville Golden Arrows claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 quarterfinal at the iconic FNB Stadium on Sunday evening.

As a result, Abafana Bes’thende became the fourth side to advance to the semifinals of the cup competition, joining Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United. Arrows will next travel to face Durban City in a league fixture on Wednesday.

Amakhosi, meanwhile, were left to rue their missed opportunities in a match they largely dominated without finding the net. Chiefs will be determined to bounce back to winning ways when they host Sekhukhune United in their league clash on Wednesday.

Amakhosi edged Abafana Bes’thende in ball possession and created several good chances they failed to convert. In the 28th minute Luke Baartman set up Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, who fired over the crossbar after failing to beat goalkeeper Edward Maova.

Ngcobo had another golden opportunity in the 44th minute after being set up by Wandile Duba, but Maova denied the left-footed playmaker from close range. Arrows threatened twice, with Brandon Petersen denying Philani Khumalo in the 14th and 30th minutes. The score was 0-0 at halftime.

Chiefs continued to dominate possession after the restart but conceded against the run of play. Khulekani Shezi surged forward on an overlapping run down the right flank and surprisingly beat Petersen at the near post, giving Arrows a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute.

Coach Fernando Da Cruz responded by bringing on Chiefs’ high-profile signing Langelihle Phiri in the 63rd minute, as the hosts pushed for an equaliser. However, Maova and his defence held firm to keep Chiefs at bay, and Arrows ultimately claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
